Thermal Processes

Combustion - Gasification - Pyrolysis

The Department of Thermal Processes is concerned with the thermal treatment of liquid and solid input materials. In this field, pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion in grates, in a revolving tubular kiln, and in fluidised-bed reactors are under investigation. Especially solid materials such as waste and biomass are employed for the purpose.

The objective is to obtain a more profound understanding of the "hot" processes, with a resulting approach for optimising the process. The close cooperation with the industry always ensures the practical orientation of research and development. Moreover, advisory opinion is offered on technical questions.

Special supplementary technical equipment allows two special fields of business:

a) During research on deposits by high-temperature endoscopy, interactions between process-engineering parameters and corrosion damage must be determined, and

b) the Measuring Unit § 26 processes enquiries from companies and municipalities on discontinuous emission measurements.

Work on models of mass and heat transfer is conducted in cooperation with the Modelling and Simulation Department. The objective is to obtain a reliable and reproducible description of the thermal processes in various operations.
